Presidents Report

From: President John Kurpas
Re: Revised April Board Letter
Date: April 22, 2009
This revised board letter comes to you at the request of the treasurer. Due to the impending tax season and other outside obligations Sara asked if she could be allowed an extension to submit several motions for your consideration. Thank you, Sara.
On our agenda for April are the following items:
Nominations been submitted to the membership by the secretary in writing by April 1st.
Additional nominations are due May 1st.
April Motion #1:
Submitted by Eric Sheets: I move that ACDCA sponsor, an AKC Fall two day, All Herding Breed, Course B, Sheep, Herding Trial, to be carried out entirely by ACDCGLA, on or about Oct 31 and Nov 1, in Southern California. No budget or expenditures by ACDCA will be required.
April Motion #2:
Motion submitted by Serenity Littlefield:
The International Committee would like to recommend to the board, that the proceeds from the 2009 property show go to ACDHEW for use as follows.
Use the money to encourage ACD owners who have bilateral deaf dogs or unilateral deaf dogs to put those dogs' blood into the CHIC DNA database by paying the fee that would otherwise be required to get the dog into the database. Also, pay the OFA fees for entering any BAER tests for ACD's into the database. The money shall be divided as appropriate for costs incurred.
This will help deafness in two ways. The AKC Canine Health Foundation is not currently funding any deafness research. If we create a repository of blood from deaf and unilateral ACD's a future researcher will be able to use the blood. We may even be able to persuade a researcher to take on the project if they know that the samples have already been collected.
The rationale for paying to enter BAER tests into the OFA database is that many people have the data but haven't turned it in or they don't fill out the OFA paperwork. Many ACD's don't meet the criteria for CHIC because they are lacking BAER tests in an open database. This would be a great service to the ACD community.
Joyce will also ask the ACDHEW Board if they will contribute to these efforts as well.
April Motion #3:
Motion Submitted by Alison Deilke:
I would like to make a motion that any links to kennels, breeders, or kennel names on the ACDCA website are current members in good standing of the ACDCA and have signed the breeders Code of Ethics.
April Motion #4:
Motion Submitted by Sara Reiter:
I move that when ACDCA members make trophy donations, we will publish a single link to their website (not directly to their business operations or publications) if desired. No links will be published for non-members making trophy donations.
April Motion #5:
Motion Submitted by Sara Reiter:
I move that the ACDCA donate $2,500, which is considered to come from Purina Program funds, to the AKC Canine Health Fund. .
April Motion #6:
Motion Submitted by Sara Reiter:
I move that the ACDCA donate $1,000, of which $500 is considered to come from Purina Program funds to the Baker Institute (for Dr. Acland),
April Motion #7:
Motion Submitted by Sara Reiter:
I move that the ACDCA donate $3,500 to the ACDHEW, which is considered to come from Properties funds.
Respectfully

Busy, Busy, Busy... things are coming along for the Specialty! It is so wonderful to feel the camaraderie building with our wonderful group of folks.
Hard to believe that everyone will be heading to Texas in just 5 FIVE months!
As always please send any brag, concern my way, always need things for the Quarterly.
Happy Trials!

SE Directors Report
Hello to all:
Time truly seems to fly by! It is hard to believe May is already here and the National Specialty in Belton, Texas is just a few months away.
As usual, the Mid-Florida ACD Fanciers are hard at work. They have requested Board approval to hold their second Regional Specialty on January 24, 2010 in Brooksville, Florida. Mid-Florida is also planning a two day herding trial with cattle and sheep in January of 2010. Watch for further details.
After four years as your Southeast Regional Director, I have decided to step aside at the end of this term. I would like to thank everyone for your support and encouragement these past years. It has been an exciting and memorable experience and I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve the club in such a rewarding capacity.
The ACDCA, Inc. Nominating Committee submitted their slate for the 2009-2010/2011 open Officer and Director positions for the membership’s consideration. Additional nominations for an alternative slate may be made and directed to the Secretary on or before the first day of May. If an alternative slate for any of the open positions is submitted, there will be a ballot sent out to the membership for voting. If such balloting occurs, this is your chance as a member of the ACDCA, Inc. to vote for the individual(s) you feel will do their best for the breed and the ACDCA, Inc. The ACDCA, Inc. is an awesome club with a number of selfless volunteers working hard, putting themselves out there and giving of their time. Please vote and have your voice be heard.
Until next time,
Pam Mansfield
SW Directors Report
Events in our region have been happening left and right as are reports it seems. I probably need tutoring about which reports when, go where. I will be submitting another report for the members to be published in the quarterly by May 10 (am I on the right trail boss?).
ACDGLA put on a regional specialty in March and a 2 day Herding Trial (all breed AND ACD only) in April. Both events were very successful by all accounts. In addition, the president of ACDGLA is supporting GCACDC’s 2010 PjM with advice re the specialty and planning.
Gold Coast met recently and has both plans going for 2010 and will be supporting some October shows in 2009, as it did last year, with ACDCA’s approval (need the AKC sanctioned club’s approval too). I will post that motion in a minute or two. GCACDC had to cancel the upcoming Tom Lam’s Handler Clinic – Tom suffered a detached cornea last week, while Kim was home tending to her mom. I called and emailed all the entrants and GCACDC will be refunding their entry fees promptly.
GCACDC hosting the ACDCA 2010 specialty is still moving forward steadily. We have dates (Oct 9-15, 2010), the sites tentatively reserved and a draft budget that looks like a very good starting point. GCACDC is proposing most events taking place at the Dixon Fairgrounds (reasonable cost for our area) and the herding trial taking place 15 min away at Herding4ewe (Debbie Pollard’s facility) where many trials are successfully held. So far, after working on over 100 line items, we are estimating total expenses of 43K and income of almost 49K; but this estimate and contracts have a long ways to go. Regardless, I am confident GCACDC is doing a good job of planning and managing costs. I will be providing what I have specifically to the VP and Sec right away.
That is all I got. Call me if you need my attention and think I’m ignoring you. Chances are I am not, just am busy with all kinds of other emergency type stuff.

NE Directors Report
Spring has finally hit the North East. With the nicer weather comes the start of the Spring show season. Bull Run once again held a supported entry at the Harrisburg Kennel Club show on Saturday, April 11th.
Despite some rainy weather, there was a nice entry of dogs. Winners were:
Best Of Breed: CH. Kurpas' Promise Land, bred and owned by Cheryl and John Kurpas
Best Opposite Sex: CH. Misfits Signature Event, bred by C. Humphrey & R. Isley, owned by Robbie Hughes
Winners Dog, and Best Of Winners: Vanhaley Briarmore Pay Dirt, bred by L,D & M Cartwright, owned by Tracey Stevens
Reserve Winners Dog: Kombinalong Super Natural, bred by Narelle Robertson, owned by John & Virginia Ramos
Winners Bitch: Tanglewood's Picking Wildflowers, bred by Rosemarie Jurain & Lee Kephart, owned by Rosemarie & Luke Jurain
Reserve Winners Bitch: Bryn Mawr's Terra Nova At Madcap, bred by Monica Shifflet, owned by Jane Killion
In keeping with past years, Bull Run gave out some outstanding prizes and also had a great silent auction for neat things at the end of judging.
On the herding front, as of this writing, Bull Run's two day AKC sanctioned herding trial is accepting entries. The trial dates are June 27th and 28th.
The North Atlantic Australian Cattle Dog Club is having its annual meeting in Gardiner, NY on August 2nd.

We’re busy working on the July regional specialty and the August herding trials. This is the busiest time of year for Cascade. Next weekend we have a fun day, herding, obedience and conformation all are welcome, to bring their dogs and dust off those winter cobwebs.
Welcome new regional members Jennifer Waters Graham, WA and Jacklynn Ray, Hesperus, CO. Our regional members list is up and running. Don’t forget to sign on NWACDCA-subscribe@ yahoogroups. com put your name in the body of the message so I know who you are.
Also any new or old juniors who need help with setting up their teams feel free to contact me.

NC Directors Report
I wholeheartedly apologize to membership in my region for not posting or voting on this month's motions before the Board. While I normally vote in a timely manner I did not do so this month and before the polls closed there were other things on my mind (a puppy in ICU).
Members in the North Central region (and elsewhere) are looking forward to the supported entry up in Michigan next month....we hope to see many friends in K-zoo!

APRIL 2009 VICE PRESIDENT MONTHLY REPORT
As you can tell most of the committees have been busy. The National Show Committee chair is still vacant but I can tell you that things are well under way for the preparation of the 2009 ACDCA National Specialty in Belton, Texas. The show site is secure, all applications have been turned into AKC and approved, and the stock contracts are still in the works with the possibility of being secured soon. All judging contracts have been secured as well. I believe you will all have a LARGE time this year. The Trophy committee is also working hard on the trophy selection. Soon the trophy donations page will be up and running for you to make your donations. So keep checking ACDCA.org for that. For what all the committees are doing please review the following reports below.
Sincerely,
Serenity Littlefield
ACDCA Vice President 2008-09
APRIL 2009 MONTHLY COMMITTEE REPORTS
Awards & Performance Committee:
Thank you to the BOD for the favorable vote on the recommendations for the standardization of Rally and Agility High Point awards for National Specialty shows, as well as the additional wording added to the Specialty Versatility competition rules clarifying that "exhibition only" herding entries do not meet the criteria to be included for Versatility competitions as no qualifying score is possible under AKC rules. The updated info is being sent to the ACDCA webmaster for web update.
Reports have been ordered from AKC for determining the annual high point awards for 2008 for Herding, Agility, Rally, Obedience and Jr. Showmanship. The reports should arrive by May 1. Tabulations for the 2008 publicity awards are nearly complete with verification of ownership underway. A nomination for Hero Dog has been received.
New titles earned by ACDs will now appear in The Quarterly. Titles earned in 2008 have been sent to Kelly Rae by quarters and will be "caught up" as space allows. Titles earned in the first quarter of 2009 will be sent to Kelly in the next few days, as the (corrected) report for March arrived from AKC last week.
The only recent news received from the Juniors Advisory Team is that they are looking into what other breed clubs have in place to recognize their juniors' achievements. Sadly, the last I heard we have very few ACDCA Juniors participating this year.
Respectfully submitted,
Paula Mayes
Awards/Performance Chair
AKC Gazette Columnist:
All deadlines have been met. The AKC editor had some nice things to say, so I suppose I am on the right track. I am working on the next issue now. I will have all the columns in the scrapbook at the National in Texas for anyone who would like to see.

ROM Committee:
No new news here, just working on organizing and updating. Had to put on hold for a few weeks with running a herding trial and now my boss is in ICU after a quintuple bypass this past Monday morning.
Thanks,
Kim Broster
ROM Chair
Website Committee:
Trophy donations were taken off line until new information and forms are received and the trophy committee and board decides how they wish to proceed with online sponsorships.
There is some discussion about links from ACDCA off site. All off site links open in a new browser window/tab and none are endorsed by ACDCA as stated. Removing off site links to non code of ethics signers would eliminate nearly all of the links on the site which have been reliably archived there since the site's inception. Removing off site links would include the cattle dog pedigree database, Esther Eckman's history, other historical information pertaining to our breed as well as Mark's famous FAQ. Not all off site links are to member sites or to COE sites as many site providers are either deceased or not breeders of cattle dogs. Currently the sites are linked via "useful links" and "library" as a courtesy to all interested in our breed who visit our website. Endorsement of COE only would not only limit their experience of our website and breed it would also be a rejection of most available information on our breed. The links appearing on ACDCA.org are in line with the type of links supplied by other AKC breed clubs on their websites.
Information for the specialty site is slow to come. I have not received a reply from the board or hosting club pertaining to my site questions or where to send the numerous inquiries I've received through the websites email address.
Received a few updates which were posted and noted on the site's annual news page.
Respectfully Submitted,

Breeder Referral:
For April there have been 5 requests for names of breeders for puppies---and there were only 3 in March. I have had several requests lately from people with girls in season and they want to find a stud dog. I send them also to COE breeders in their area. Of course I always send our breed packet to them.
I know there are lots of puppies now and hope they all find the right home!

International:
We are happy our Board of Directors has approved our motion for proceeds from Properties--for the 2009 specialty. You can read the motion online at the Club website. Essentially ACDHEW will get it to use with creating repositories for deafness and create CHIC DNA data base.
We also have confirmed a judge for Properties this year. We are excited--as Tracy Hessenburger is making the trip from Australia and is a breeder there, under the Lanbart Kennel name.
I don’t anticipate any changes this year for the show--But that could change.
Respectfully
Jolyn Owen
International Chair
Herding:
As I write this I'm looking at a calendar and relaxing, knowing that the specialty is still half a year away and I have plenty of time to make plans and get my dogs as fine tuned as I can. As I continue to look at that calendar days and weeks are dissolving under various commitments at an alarming rate and I've come to realize that the specialty is ONLY 6 months away. I better get busy!
The herding committee is working hand in hand with the TX group in making arrangements for the specialty herding trials and at this point I'm very happy to be able to say things are well in hand. The folks in Texas, to whom all the leg work has fallen on, are doing a great job. If anyone would like to volunteer to help in any way before, during or after the trials it's never too early to send me your name.
Just as the seasons themselves ebb and flow so do the herding trial seasons around the county. Down here in the south we are pretty much done for the summer while folks further north are just getting started. There are more and more people getting out with their ACDs and doing what they were bred to do. It's great to hear all the brags and laments because either way it means the dogs are working. Amy, our herding committee stat guru, provided the following numbers which I found interesting:
There are 45 ACDs that have qualified at a trial since the beginning of this club year. Those 45 dogs qualified for a total of 74 runs in the started class, 2 in intermediate, and 36 in the advanced.
There are quite a few new names showing up on the trial tallies. I, along with the rest of the herding committee, hope to see all those people currently in started continue on. And we are willing to put our money where our mouths are <g> so if there is any way that we can help you guys please let us know.
Until next time, Happy Herding!
Stacey

Quarterly:
Here at the Quarterly we have been continuing to work on figuring out the best way to manage postage cost. We are working on getting more ads, however I feel that the reason that our ad revenue is down is because of the ACD Spotlight. I feel that most people that advertise with them think that it is a part of the ACDCA, since it is linked directly to the ACDCA.org website. I believe some kind of policy needs to be in place for allowing private business links to our web site which are in direct competition with the ACDCA. Or charge them a monthly access fee.
The Spring Issue is in the final stages at the printer and should be ready to mail the first of next week. Deadline for the summer issue is May 1st and May 10th.

Juniors Advisory Team:
We think we have figured a way to review and confirm the points awarded for 2008 and will taking that on shortly. This will not require any further information from the prior committee.
We are going to contact each and every current ACDCA Junior household (not just a blanket invitation from the list) to make sure they understand about registering their Junior team and can "we assist" in any way. We need to make a clear cut-off for the grace period we imposed and move on with 2009.
Deb Mintzer is working on a budget for the Junior Awards for the JAT Team to submit to the BOD shortly.
When this is done, we will be looking at submitting recommendations/changes for 2010.
