John Kurpas – Abstain per Roberts Rules of Order

Motion #3 Board requests Junior committee information: Information that is required is data on how many juniors participated in the program this year and, without any names, what are the points earned to date for each junior participant. (For example, Junior1 has 100 points from conformation, obedience and herding, Junior 2 has 50 points from rally, etc. This information is important for evaluating how well the program is working.) For the boards information only: The review process will include getting input from the membership. The Board has particular concerns that this program is not similar to our other awards programs and that the membership may not be sufficiently aware of this program and its requirements.

Sara Reiter, Treasurer

Herding, Earthdog and Coursing Committee

1. Discussion on ideas to make earthdog trials more efficient with multiple trials, multiple clubs, etc. during a trial weekend.
2. Herding Advisory Committee. Committee report complete with the exception of two committee proposals that do not have the approval of the AKC Field Rep. The two outstanding issues are a proposed Course D (ranch type course) and revisions to Herding Championships.
3. Coursing Advisory Committee. Report will go to the October AKC Board for vote.
4. The Herding Regulations have a mistake with the wording of “level” vs. “class” as it pertains to Herding Championship points. This will be fixed in the next published revision of the regulations.
5. The Scottish Terrier Delegate has proposed an additional, higher level, earthdog title requiring Double Q’s. Staff has sent surveys to the twenty five eligible earthdog breeds for their opinions.
6. The Carting Program enthusiasts have requested that the Board once again consider their program as an AKC titling event. There was a suggestion made that an Ad-Hoc committee be formed to put together a new proposal. Although the HEC Committee does not have any oversight of a Carting program it is thought that this would be the logical committee for it should the program be adopted.

Parent Clubs Committee

1. Conditional registration reports can be requested by Parent clubs for those dogs accepted in the individual breeds. So far 2400 cases have been reviewed and 900 Conditional registrations issued.
2. A registration fee discount will be available for full litter registrations. A litter registration of $25.00 plus $12.00 per puppy instead of $20.00 per puppy will be available.
3. Discussion on the Mixed Breed program that the Board rejected.
4. Judges Education. AKC is encouraging all Parent Clubs to develop a list of approved mentors.
5. Discussion on a Veterinary Student’s report on internet puppy sales. Five of the ten most popular breeds are being studied. Early indications are that breeders within the “fancy” breed healthier puppies and charge less for them.
6. Discussion on providing judging guidelines by each specialty club as events within specialties can vary widely from club to club pertaining to futurities, sweepstakes, AOM’s etc. Guidelines should be sent to the judges prior to assignments.

Caucus

1. Group Realignment Committee report. Pending vote of Delegates to increase groups, and the Board to move the breeds, the Groups will be increased from seven to ten. Sporting will split into to groups, Pointers and Setters in one and Retrievers and Spaniels in the other. Hounds will split into Scent Hounds and Sight Hounds. A new Northern group and new Companion group will form. There will no longer be a group called Non Sporting. There are twenty two more breeds to enter the stud book in the next two years that will be distributed in the various groups. If accepted the groups could be implemented as soon as March 2009.

Meeting

1. Two new member clubs accepted.
2. Dire numbers pertaining to declining registrations discussed. Registrations are the core business of the AKC and their market share continues to decrease and go to the approximately thirty competing registries. 82% of the registrations are from pet owners and only 18% come from within the “fancy”. In the past fifteen years registrations have declined by 46%.
3. Chapter 11, Section 1 and Chapter 7, Sections 1, 2 & 3. Passed. This change resolves numerous issues resulting from ineligibility caused by dogs shown on litter numbers. Individual registrations will now be required for event entries.
4. Chapter 7, Section 13 Passed. Clarifies the limit of entries from “dogs” to “entries” that can be judged in a single day. It also permits judges to complete their provisionally approved breeds. In the event of overloads, Event committees may not remove any provisional breed from a judge without their permission.
5. Chapter 5, Sections 1, 2 & 3. Passed. Adds wording to make it consistent with Chapter 14, Section 23 that only amateurs may judge in certain Field Trials.
6. Chapter 14, Section 8. Passed. Provides clarification of retired gun tests.
7. Chapter 14, Section 20. Passed. Clarifies use of birds that are not to be retrieved.
8. Chapter 14, Section 10. Passed. New paragraph which would allow for CKC Field Champions to meet eligibility requirements to participate in same level AKC events.
9. Chapter 14, Section 25. Passed. For Retrievers, eliminates all references to walk ups from the rules and clarify rules for handler/dog at the line.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Respectfully submitted,
Kathryn Hamilton, AKC Delegate

First, I would like to thank and acknowledge Larry Favreau for his service as SW Director on the ACDCA Board. He did a fine job of keeping the regional clubs like Gold Coast and ACDGLA working well with ACDCA and we all owe him, like all the past Board members, our gratitude for watching the store and taking care of business on our behalf.

Second, I’d like to thank those that nominated me and trust me in this role for you, the members. I see my role as looking after Club as a business, advocate for its Members as share holders/doers, and the Australian Cattle Dog breed as our singular, precious asset whose integrity requires our continual work and vigilance. To reach me, my door is always open. Call me if you have issues, concerns or wants from your club. If I am currently unavailable, please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as I can. All I ever ask is for your patience, explanation of the situation and your recommended solution.

Getting to the meat of my message, I’d like to report on what’s been done recently in the SW region and what is coming up.

The Gold Coast ACD club, with the written support of ACDCA, supported the Northern California Herding Group Association and Sacramento Valley Dog Fancier’s Dog Shows, October 24, 25, & 26 2008 in Dixon CA (same site as Gold Coast proposed to hold the 2010 ACDCA National). I am told they had a great entry of dogs (41 Friday, 42 Saturday and 41 Sunday) from across the West and everyone enjoyed the site and our unseasonably warm weather! GCACDC sends their heartfelt gratitude to all who entered and travelled to this weekend’s show.

AKC/Eukanuba National Championship (Show, Obedience and Agility Invitational), December 13 and 14, 2008, Long Beach , CA : Joyce Rowland and ACDCGLA have graciously stepped up (I think this is the third time now) to provide handlers, dogs and décor for an ACD meet the breed booth, at this prestigious event. Congrats if you are invited and if you expect to attend or enter please stop by the meet the breed booth in the front hall and lend those in the booth some support if they need it. This is another great opportunity to show the public and other dog fanciers how stable and adaptable the ACD is when trained, even when in a crowded, noisy and somewhat chaotic indoor event.

Corky Vroom Handling Seminar, “Learn to SHOW like a PRO” January 10th and 11th, Sonoma County Fairgrounds, Santa Rosa, CA; Sponsored by The American Belgian Malinois Club and Gold Coast ACD Club (who sais we all can’t get along? )

Cow Palace (Golden Gate Kennel Club) 2 Day Benched Dog Show, January 24 and 25, 2008, Daly City, CA: This show was once billed the largest Benched Dog Show West of the Mississippi and typically gets thousands pet owners/fanciers from all over the region visiting for the show, dog sport demonstrations, vendors and of course all the breeds of dogs on the benches to see all day Saturday and Sunday. As it has done for many years, Gold Coast will have a decorated bench at this show and will perform public outreach/education about the ACD.

ACDCGLA Regional Specialty and Sweepstakes, March 28 2009, Bakersfield , CA . I heard rave reviews of ACDCGLA’s regional last year and I am sure they will outdo themselves again next year. The show site is beautiful, the parent show that weekend puts on a great event and of course you can expect wonderful awards, warm hospitality and camaraderie from the ACDCGLA crew. So please save this date and plan to make a trip to Bakersfield next year!

ACDCGLA Herding Trials and Tests, April 18 and 19, 2009 Escondido , CA . What else can I say? Another class ACD event by ACDCGLA with good stock (Cattle, Sheep and Ducks), facility, awards, and ACD competition travelling to this event from all over the country! Save the date and Go By!

Eric Sheets, SW Director

Congratulations to all who did well at the specialty, and thank you to Bull Run for hosting such a fabulous event. Although I was unable to attend I’ve heard nothing but good reports, in spite of sometimes uncooperative weather.
The Cascade club is busy working on our January regional specialty that coincides with the Rose City cluster in Portland, OR. I hope we will see many of you at this fun event. Michelle Pardee is the show chair; thank you Michelle for once again volunteering for this huge job.
As winter sets in I look forward to cozy nights planning spring and summer events. Hopefully this year we will stay dryer than the past few. Training in the rain can get a bit tiresome, wet muddy dogs makes for a lot of extra laundry :0)
Stay safe and warm this winter.
Happy Holidays to all,
Alison Deilke, NW Director

It is hard to believe another year has come and gone. The Southeast Region has been a busy bee this past year. We are very lucky to have two ACD clubs here that keep activities going all year long for everyone to participate in and enjoy.
I missed the National Specialty this year in PA. Thank you to Bull Run for all your hard work and dedication, and congratulations to all the winners in every venue for their outstanding dogs and performances.
The Carolina Club is gearing up for their very 1st Annual ACDCA, Inc. Regional Specialty to be held in Concord, NC on Thursday, November 13th, followed by three days of All-Breed Shows. If it is anything like last year, we are all going to have an outstanding time.
The Mid-Florida Club will also be holding their very 1st Annual ACDCA, Inc. Regional Specialty in Brooksville, FL in January of 2009. Mid-Florida’s Regional will be held in conjunction with the famous Florida Winter Circuit that is jam-packed full of All-Breed shows with lots of fun for everyone.
I am looking forward to both of these fun-filled Regionals with hopes of seeing as many of you as possible. You don’t want to miss out, so mark your calendars and plan to attend!
It has been my pleasure serving the club as Southeast Regional Director. If there is anything I can help you with, or answer any questions you might have, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Until next time,
Pam Mansfield, SE Director
Thank you to those who entrust that I can be of service to this club; I do appreciate the vote of confidence. I have been able to focus my attention on the membership renewals and get the information fine tuned so I can and will have the directories out by December 1st along with the AGM meeting minutes. Thank you so very much Tracy Johnson and Leigh Ann Yandle-Perry for taking such careful notes and considerations when dealing with these matters; in the end it’s the information that you’ve so carefully gathered that will put us into the next season.
With a new year comes new ideas and for me new challenges! I look forward to this year and working with my new colleagues! Happy Holidays to all and the best of wishes in the New Year!
Thank you,
Cherish Girard, Secretary

All the committees have been put together with chairs and committee members and have been submitted and posted. They have also been submitted for updating on the website and quarterly. The committees are all working hard to get things geared up for the upcoming year. I look forward to working with the board and committees again this year. Let’s make it a great one.
Serenity Littlefield, Vice President

Winter Greetings to all,

Contrary to recent publication, we don't live in Oklahoma (grin). The address snafu seems untraceable, but we are still in east central Illinois and plan to stay here.

A big thumbs up and hearty thank you to the Bull Run Club who put on one heck of a Specialty! Before we know it we'll all be headed to Belton and enjoying that good ol' southern hospitality once again! I appreciate all of you who approached me at the Specialty with ideas and suggestions. Hopefully within the upcoming club year we'll hammer out some of those thoughts and get the formally presented to the Board.

There will be an increased effort to improve communication this year in the ACDCA. As part of that effort, I plan to create an email list for members in the North Central region. Hopefully by the time this issue hits your mailbox that project will be checked off my "to-do" list. Until then feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Best,
Kathy Buetow Branson
North Central Regional Director
