Latest PRCD-PRA news from OptiGen - June 1, 2005 press release

Deafness prevalence and pigmentation and gender associations in dog breeds at risk
by Dr. George Strain published in The Veterinary Journal - 2004

Dear Members--

The 2001-2002 Genetics Committee thanks you for your support in meeting some key milestones!  The prcd-PRA test will be commercially available through OptiGen beginning on May 1, 2002 (click here for more info).  What a great day for our breed.  This accomplishment is the result efforts of researchers at Cornell supported by Australian Cattle Dog lovers from around the world.

We can honor this great success by participating in the testing program and encouraging others to do so.  We can honor the memories of great people and great dogs by forgoing the witchhunting and figure pointing that have consumed other breed clubs.  Instead, let us shun those who would use such approaches.

This is not the end of the Genetics Committee work for the year.  Also planned are the creation of a non-profit organization for Australian Cattle Dog Health, Welfare and Education; an extensive survey on ACD Health so that we can focus future research and continued work with OFA on the Australian Cattle Dog Health Registry.
