Australian Cattle Dog Rescue, Inc.® Guidelines

This corporation has two main objectives. First is to rescue and rehome as many purebred ACDs in need as is realistically and responsibly possible. Second is to educate both the public and the animal shelters about our breed so that they can make informed placement decisions.

  1. To do rescue through Australian Cattle Dog Rescue, Inc.®, you must be a paid-up ACDCA member in good standing.
    • Australian Cattle Dog Rescue, Inc.® liability insurance does not cover non-members.
    • If you ask someone else to evaluate, transport, foster or screen a dog for you, they are NOT covered for liability if something goes wrong.

  2. All dogs going into the program must:
    • Have a long tail, ears up, brown eyes, and look like a purebred.
    • Be healthy, i.e. no deaf, blind, severely injured, heartworm positive, etc.
    • Be evaluated as having a good temperament and show no aggressiveness towards dogs or people. No snapping or fear-biting is acceptable.
    • Owner-surrenders are acceptable without AKC papers as long as the dog meets the criteria, and there are no shelter dogs in need.

  3. Although dogs may be fostered by non ACDCA members on a temporary basis, all dogs must live with the ACDCA member who places the dog for proper evaluation before placement.

  4. The following are recommendations when fostering a dog:
    • Do not take any dog out of a shelter unless you are prepared to keep it if you don't get it placed.
    • Lots of experience in handling strange untrained dogs is a big plus!
    • Keep the dog for a week or two and reevaluate its temperament after that time in order to get a more accurate read on its temperament. This helps in finding the most compatible placement.
    • Put basic obedience training on the dog to increase the chances of a successful placement.
    • Do not take a dog that is a serious liability. Recommend to the shelter staff that they humanely euthanize it. This is true for private parties with biting dogs as well.

  5. Adoption requirements (NO EXCEPTIONS, NO EXCUSES):
    • All rescues must be spayed/neutered before going into an adoptive home.
    • All rescues must be vaccinated as far as possible in the time you foster them.
    • All rescues must be tested for intestinal parasites and heartworm, and must be started on heartworm preventative.
    • All rescues must be either microchipped or tattooed.
    • Registration is to be Australian Cattle Dog Rescue, Inc.® with the committee member's name who did the adoption.
    • All prospective adopters MUST completely fill out and sign the questionnaire/application form.
    • Upon adoption, the committee member must completely fill out the adoption form, and it must be signed by the adopting party. Both the adopting party and the committee member get a copy.

  6. Reimbursement practices and procedures:
    • You must send in ALL of the following:  - a copy of an Australian Cattle Dog Rescue, Inc.® adoption contract  - a clear color photo of the dog  - a copy of the spay/neuter certificate  - a copy of the vaccinations received  - a copy of the microchip/tattoo certificate
    • Send these items along with a reimbursement form to the ACD Rescue President.
    • Upon receipt of these items, you will receive $50 to help with the next dog. You will also receive the cost of microchipping or tattooing each rescue before placement including registration to a maximum of $30,for a maximum total reimbursement of $80. Those committee members who have scanners and chips paid for by the club will not be eligible for the $30 microchipping reimbursement.
    • If money is available at year's end, the committee members as a whole will vote reimbursement for non-regular expenses not to exceed $50 per request.
    • Private slush funds and the adoption donation do not need to be submitted to the Australian Cattle Dog Rescue, Inc.® although the amount received as the adoption donation must be noted on the adoption contract.
