OFA Champions of Health Article

Inaugural OFA/ACDCA Champions of Health
Recognized At ACDCA National Specialty

In conjunction with AKC parent clubs, like the Australian Cattle Dog Club of America, Inc. (ACDCA), the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) sponsors an annual "Champion of Health" award for each participating breed. At the suggestion of a club member, the ACDCA Board agreed to participate in this worthy program and developed guidelines that were reviewed and approved by OFA. Nominations were accepted for the first time in 2022 with the winner to be honored at the National Specialty.

The OFA asks that all nominees have appropriate health clearances and significant achievements in the show ring, in performance events like herding, companion events or as producers. OFA selects the type of award--currently the award is an engraved crystal item along with a $100 donation to the AKC Canine Health Foundation (AKCCHF) in the name of the honored dog.

ACD owners must apply for the award through the ACDCA using criteria and process developed by the ACDCA which are consistent with the OFA’s focus. The ACDCA will typically make one to three nominations of qualified dogs each year and the OFA makes the final selection of the annual winner. It is intended that the award be announced and given at the ACDCA's annual awards banquet. In addition, a photograph of the award-winning dogs will be displayed on the ACDCA website and in the ACD Quarterly ( ACDCA magazine). A photo may also appear on the OFA website.

There were five Australian Cattle Dogs nominated for the 2022 award--all of which met the minimum qualifications. Three of the nominees were forwarded to OFA for selection of a single winner. The finalists were:

GCHS DC RACH Bar H Blue Bulldozer CD BN RM3 RAE5 HSAd HSBd HSDs HIAdsc HIBd HXAdc HXBd HSAsMcM HXAsM NJP CGCA CGCU

But after reviewing the nomination packages, OFA did something unprecedented!! Read it in their own words.

THE ORTHOPEDIC FOUNDATION FOR ANIMAL’S 2022 CHAMPION OF HEALTH AWARD(S)

The OFA would like to welcome the Australian Cattle Dog Club of America as a participant in our Annual Champion of Health Awards. The award is intended to recognize dogs that have earned significant achievements AND that have a Breed appropriate complement of health screening results. We have intentionally left achievement qualifications flexible so that all dogs can be considered equally whether excelling in conformation, obedience/rally, agility, herding, in other dog sports, as service dogs, or as producers of a subsequent generation of healthy successful offspring.

The OFA received three nominations from the ACDCA. The process that generated these three nominations should be commended. Taken as a group, this was the strongest set of nominees across all the participating breeds that we have received since the program’s inception. Given the difficult decision in selecting a single awardee, and given that all three dogs are now seniors with a lifetime of achievements behind them, we have made the decision for the first time, to recognize all the nominees and award THREE 2022 OFA ACDCA CHAMPIONS OF HEALTH!

Our sincere congratulations to Envy, Maverick, Dozer, their breeders, and owners, and all those that have been touched by these three amazing dogs!

Sincerely,

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals

What a wonderful tribute to our inaugural winners and to the strength of the club’s program! Lovely crystal awards and certificates were presented to the winners at the Annual Awards Banquet in a very congratulatory and emotional moment for all those attending.

Kudos to these most worthy winners, the other qualified nominees, their owners, and breeders. And please look for the nomination announcements for the 2023 awards.
